Yes, the groundhog saw his shadow and that means we will have at least 6 more weeks of winter. Spring doesn’t officially arrive until the end of the month anyway so I guess it really doesn’t matter. This is the time of year for optimism about it warming up and for things to start blooming and getting ready for summer. It is also the time of year for PAWS testing. That window opens on the 8th and we will be busy scheduling all students into the testing window. It promises to be a very busy spring and summer.

The legislature will be over shortly after you receive this newsletter and we anticipate that not much will change for districts this year except the possibility that more money will have to be paid into the retirement system. As I write this, there is a bill to add approximately 3% to the system and the bill specifies that half will be paid by the district and half by the employee. Currently as part of our wage/benefit package, the district pays the entire amount of the retirement for all employees. This bill could change that so we are watching it closely. A three percent raise for the district would be approximately $50,000. Other than this particular bill, there doesn’t seem to be much else going on legislatively until next year.

During the next year the funding model will be recalibrated. That means that it will be re-written and much could change about how schools are funded. It is always an interesting time for staff to participate in the recalibration process. Hopefully, not a lot will change and we will be able to continue the good work this district has always been known to accomplish.

We are gearing up for the summer maintenance projects which this year include new heating systems in the shops at the high school, new ceilings in the main NCHS building, new tile in the science rooms at the high school and several smaller projects. As you will recall the last two years we were able to install a complete new HVAC system at LEMS and it is finally looking like it has been a good investment.
Have a great March.
